How many people have yearned to follow life in the parallel universe of the Inland Waterways of the UK?
Conversely we’re aware there’s a whole heap of folks who think those of us who do are rather odd, and maybe more than a bit ‘common’ (we occasionally hear the term ‘Water Gypsy’ to describe ‘liveaboards’, used in an overtly negative way). That’s ok, each to their own. But maybe reserve your judgement unless, or until, you know more about it.
Watching Prunella Scales and Timothy West on More4 (in UK) in ‘Great Canal Journeys‘ may help too – they paint a charming picture of the joys of this mostly idyllic life.
We’ve been blogging about our narrow boating adventures on ‘Blogger’ since we first took the plunge to travel from New Zealand to UK in April 2009. At that stage we owned ‘Northern Pride’, our 45′ long floating home for six-months during the British spring and summers of 2009 and 2010.
In 2013, after much thought and planning, we sold up and relocated to UK to live ‘indefinitely’. Since then, we toyed for a year with the possibility of moving the blog to ‘WordPress’, having purchased our current narrowboat ‘AreandAre’ in April 2013.
Having a loyal and growing blog following, we were a little hesitant to change – but delving into the delights and possible dramas of trading from the boat in 2014, we decided to take the plunge!
A change is as good as a rest they say, and as a qualified Life Coach, I’m aware that moving out of your comfort zone is generally a very good thing for the soul.
So if you’re interested in what it’s like to swap a life on land for one on water, check out who we are on the ‘About Us’ page, follow our blog by clicking the button on the right of the screen and adding your details to follow as it evolves.
We’ll keep you updated with progress on our waterways businesses, and make living differently sustainable!
At least that’s the plan …
And for those of you who may have a dream of one day living on a narrowboat, we’ll be writing some pages that go some way to answer the queries we often receive by email or from people as we pass them by.
Things like “How much does it cost to live on a narrowboat?“, “What sort of boat should we buy?“, “Which toilet system is the best?“, “Is it cold in the winter?“, etc, etc.
If you have any particular subjects you’d like covered, please leave a comment below and we’ll do our best to write about it.
